A winter landscape

Last week we finished our topic of winter in the two classes of 5 year-old students. The class teacher (spanish one) and I decided to create a poster done by the students about winter landscapes. We thought it would be great to do it like if it was modern art.

Each group of students have to use four different techniques:

1. Colour all the piece of paper with black wax crayon and then they could draw the snowflakes in two ways or using white wax crayon or scrachinig it with a toothstick.

2. Colour the background with a black crayon and then they stick small pieces of cotton as if they were snowflakes.

3. On a white piece of paper the stick small cuttings of black tissue paper, the small white spaces they leave among the black one simulated the snowflakes.

4. On a black pieces of cartuline we put drops of paint and they extend it with a toothstick.

Here you can see the final product.

What are you wearing today?

The students at 3rd Primary in Capileira (Granada) had been working the topic "Clothes" during last January.
In one activity, we talked about our clothes.

1) They were drawing a conceptual map about the clothes they wear when it's hot and cold.

2) We took photos and described them answering the question: What are you wearing today?
This is the collaborative presentation of our work:

3) Finally, we recorded audio while we read the descriptions.

How is Aurora Borealis formed?

Do you know what Aurora Borealis is?

This question ( How is Aurora Borealis formed ?) emerged in Science Y6 classroom a few days ago and we gave it a shot to solve it.
As part of unit 7 Solar System, we did these steps to answer the question:
  1. Write "how is Aurora Borealis formed" in the Google SafeSearch for Kids.
  2. In pairs, write the answer with your own words.
  3. Write in your teacher's twitter account @julisanzmamolar your answer. We will use this hashtag to search. #auroraborealisSG
If you would like to take part in this task, you could write and find the answers in the hashtag #auroraborealisSG.

My name, my address, my PLE

This post is a tribute to #EDUPLEMOOC, the online course organized by the INTEF  which is being followed by a few thousand people, most of them teachers, but also students and other people interested in reflecting about the way we learn in a connected environment.
Last year, students at IES "La Zafra" in Motril had the opportunity to learn about PLEs and PLNs as well as make a first draft of their PLE which they would keep filling in as they found new ways to learn and/or to connect themselves through the Internet.
HERE is the link to the task where you can check that a PLE is not just for adults or university students, but is perfectly suitable for the young ones.
As a result of that research, debate and reflection, and after having had a look at the teacher's PLE, we have some prototypes of what some day will be  complete and well developed students' Personal learning Environments.
-Marta's PLE
-Elvira's PLE
-Javi's PLE
-Mase's PLE
-Lucía's PLE
-Mike's PLE
-Andrea's PLE
-Antonio's PLE
-Migue's PLE

What about you? Have you already started your PLE?

Taking care of the Earth

During a couple of weeks we have been talking about THE EARTH. As a final project for this topic we will create a poster to show everybody some rules we should follow to take care of THE EARTH and THE ATMOSPHERE.

Related Grammar:  To express our ideas we need to use:

  • I MUST......... (to say things I have to do for The Earth)
  • I MUSTN'T ...... (to say thing I don't have to do for The Earth)
  • Divide the class into pairs to have a brainstorm about habits to take care or not of The Earth.
  • Write down in the blackboard all of these ideas.
  • Teacher will give you one of those ideas and with a partner you will write and draw a picture in the worksheet.
  • Create the poster with all your classmates.
  • Finally you will choose your favourite one and you will write down in your worksheet and draw your own picture. This one will fill away in your portfolios.
The process we will follow to do this activity will be:

Challenge Based Learning Starters

What is Challenge Based Learning?

According to the definition at Wikipedia, Challenge Based Learning is an approach that focuses on increasing student engagement. It is a collaborative learning experience in which teachers and students work together to learn about compelling issues, propose solutions to real problems, and take action. The approach asks students to reflect on their learning and the impact of their actions, and publish their solutions to a worldwide audience.

But to be able to accomplish all that, we need a challenge to start off. Here is a booklet with some proposals to rise to, compiled with the aim of taking small steps towards this type of approach, hands in hands with a group of future Primary teachers who are at the moment on a Master's Degree about CLIL and ICT at URJC, in Madrid.
