eTwinning project: Reading Together at Aguilar de Campoo

This year at Colegio San Gregorio we had a eTwinning project with the students of Year 5, the English teachers consider very important this kind of proyects with our students because we think it is when they really try to use real English.

Along the different task of the project the kids will need to use the vocabulary, the grammar, the common expression we taught them in the bilingual lessons. They need to communicate with other people using a foreing language, in this case the English. Also through eTwinning teachers and students can learn new cultural topics or teaching improvements.

In the project our school, Colegio San Gregorio from Aguilar de Campoo (Spain), worked with Holy Trinity School from Guildford (England). The title of the project was "Reading Together" and the topic of it was developing the reading and writing skills of our students. In the following website you could check all the activities we have done along the school year.

There were different kind of task, but this year we have include all of them into our National Curriculum using the Standards to develop the different kind of task. We tried to have one task per each month, always using the grammar and vocabulary which was learnt along the units during the English lessons.

All of them were published into the website of the project, here there will show a summary with the final products of each task.

Creating a map about our town: Aguilar de Campoo

Along the second term of this school year the students of Year 2 of Colegio San Gregorio in Aguilar de Campoo had to learn about the different places of the city (town hall, supermarket, library, main square).

For that purpose we did to different task:

  • First of all we created a big poster at the classroom in which each student had to go and take a real photo of the different parts of the town.

  • Secondly, we prepare in pairs the script for a video in which the students explain the different places of the town with at least to sentences explaining it. Then we went out to record all the videos. Here are all the final products:

  • Finally we created a Google Map, like if it was a touristic guide of our town: Aguilar de Campoo.  Here it is for you,  we hope you like it.

We hope you enjoyed it, we did it!!

MUMO By Alan Rojo & Year 6B

This post has been adapted to English from MUMO por Alan Rojo y 6ºB . Congratulations to the student!
Hi!
My name is Alan Rojo. I am a pupil from Year 6B at San Gregorio School. We learnt a bit about the MUMO museum two weeks ago.

In MUMO project we have learnt about different things about Art, different people who has done works of art at the MUMO museum.
MUMO means movable museum.
MUMO has travelled around the world.

MUMO museum is very interesting to children and adults. It is funny because they need to use the imagination.
Also it is very interesting to look at children creating animals with organic things such as: egg cartons, bags of plastic, branches, leaves, stones, etc.
We learnt everything thanks to Cristian and Jara.
You can find more information in this article at Diario Palentino Newspaper "MuMo" acerca a los escolares al arte contemporáneo

After that we created a mindmap (#visualthinking #dibújamelas) about MUMO museum.
We answered these four questions:
  • What is MUMO?
  • What have I learnt?
  • What is my opinion about it?
  • How have I learnt?
Below you can discover them:

¡THANKS MUMO!

Promoting Ecology Year 2

Year 2 students from Colegio San Gregorio (Aguilar de Campoo) were learning about natural life. Along this topic we have learnt about food chains and how we can classify the animals depending if the can live with us or not, or if we can get products from them.

This is the #visualthinking mind map we got at the end of the topic.

At the end of the topic we focus our attention on Ecology and what things we can do to take care of the enviroment.

We mixed this part of Natural Science with our subject on Literacy and we learnt how to express a rule using HAVE TO...

On the blackboard we wrote down different ideas the students thought were important to take care of the enviroment. And then we say them as if the were rules. In our cooperative groups we created posters in which we say the rule and ilustrate them with a picture.

We also practised our speaking skills to spread our posters. You can wacth it in the following video.

Writing stories

Everything started when a group of students of the URJC University with their teacher (@mjgsm) proposed to us the idea of taking part on their project ICT for Reading and Writing. We are the Year 2B students from Colegio San Gregorio. They wrote everything in this blog:

At the begining we started reading and listening to one of the stories written by the students of the course #ictclil_URJC. The title was THE NAUGHTY MOON. My students really enjoyed it.

After this we decided to create a mind map using a couple of thinking routines: GENERATE - SORT - CONNECT - ELABORATE. and THINK - PAIR - SHARE. In the mind map students try to think about what parts of the story are important. This was the final result.

So we started to create the main characters of their stories. They had to create a picture and a description. Here you have what they did.

Next day we were reading and listening to another proposal by the #ictclil_URJC students. This time the story was: THE PENGUIN WHO FELT COLD A LOT. They liked it a bit more than the previous one because this was easier for them and also there were pictures to focus their attention.

With this story we started to work on a GRAPHIC ORGANIZER about the three parts of the story. First we analized THE PENGUIN WHO FELT COLD A LOT

By the end of this activity they were ready to create their own Graphic Organizer about what is going to happen in their own story. Here you have an example about what they did.

So now everything was ready to write their stories and created a book of stories written by them. Here you can read and listen what they did.

THE DOG by Diego and Daira.

THE BAT AND THE BOY by Héctor, Francisco and Bogdan

THE CASTLE FELL DOWN by Gadea, Alfredo and Gabriel

THE PRINCESS by Andrea and Mario

THE PENGUIN by Carla and Ángela.

THE DOG AND THE BOY by Alba and Edgar.

THE MICE by Jaime, Lucía and Violeta.

THE TURTLE SUMY by Paula, Javier and Nacho.

With all the stories we have created a book to leave at the classroom library to read along this school year and leave for the next students of this classroom. Here it is:

Every student has done these stories also in a separate worksheet again to set the into their own portfolios. We have sticked on them the QR-codes so they will have their posdcast also in their folders.

We want to give a very big THANK YOU to the students of  #ictclil_URJC for bringing us this big learning opportunity. It was an amazing e-learning connection.

Read the #ictclil_urjc stories at ICT reading and writing promotion.

A project about animal with Year2

During last month we were working on Animals at Science and English Lessons. But this time we will decided to learn about it through a project. So we decided to use a thinking routine for starting and design the project with Year 2 students. We use the routine: GENERATE-SORT-CONNECT AND ELABORATE.

  • 1st we offer them the opportunity of writing down all the ideas they have about animals or what they could remember from the last school year. And they should write down on small pieces of paper.
  • 2nd they have to talk about the ideas they have had.
  • 3rd we tried to connect all the ideas they have though, because some of them belong to the same characteristic or they just have something in common.
  • Finally we talked and elaborate the final mind map about the process we would follow for the project. Here you have the final result.

So it is time to start working on the topic. For this issue we used the text book in which students have all the information they needed during the different day they have to complete the following chart.

When all of then have this informaton they have to create a product about the animals. In the mind maps you wanted to create posters about animals and so we did. When you finished the poster students present the poster to their partners.

This is how we have hanged all the posters in the corridors because we wanted all of our mates and teachers learn a bit more.

And the final thing we agreeded to make is write a book talking about animals from a scientistic point of view, like we have planned at the beggining. You can see the complete activity at our teacher's blog:

First we decided among the class a complete list about all the animals we can found in the area.

And this is the book we have created together with all of our knowledge:

A winter landscape

Last week we finished our topic of winter in the two classes of 5 year-old students. The class teacher (spanish one) and I decided to create a poster done by the students about winter landscapes. We thought it would be great to do it like if it was modern art.

Each group of students have to use four different techniques:

1. Colour all the piece of paper with black wax crayon and then they could draw the snowflakes in two ways or using white wax crayon or scrachinig it with a toothstick.

2. Colour the background with a black crayon and then they stick small pieces of cotton as if they were snowflakes.

3. On a white piece of paper the stick small cuttings of black tissue paper, the small white spaces they leave among the black one simulated the snowflakes.

4. On a black pieces of cartuline we put drops of paint and they extend it with a toothstick.

Here you can see the final product.
