Dracula

Today we share a new work from students 3rd ESO at IES Vicente Medina in Archena (Murcia).

Inma López, the teacher, tells us:

Students from 3º ESO B/C have been reading Dracula and working on it in two different ways. On the one hand, 3º B have been working on a task to show the difference between Victorian women and women nowadays. On the other hand, 3º C had to try and relate Dracula to Banksy’s graffiti to show how greed is still present in society and how the desire to advance at all costs can also have negative consequences. However, before organising the groups for such tasks, we had to work on the reading and learn about the characteristics of the Gothic novel or the ideal woman in Victorian England. We used the following reading guide to prove that Bram Stoker’s novel is not just a story about vampires:

How did 3º B show the evolution of women since Victorian times? They had to imagine that they were Jonathan in the 19th century and Mina in the 21st. Jonathan was a prisoner in Dracula’s castle and Mina wasn’t going  to sit and patiently wait for him like a 19th woman would do. She was going to stand up and make sure she wasn’t going to be there forever. They did a great job. Check out some of their videos:

3ºC also did an excellent job trying to connect Dracula’s greed with some of Banksy’s graffiti. Most of them try to show that the desire to advance at all costs without bearing in mind other people’s feelings or opinions is not always a positive thing. Here are some of their awesome works:

Saint Patrick's Day

Today, we share Saint Patrick's Day celebration from IES Jaime Gil de Biedma in Nava de la Asunción (Segovia). 

Thanks to Inmaculada Cuéllar, the English teacher and Sara García Pardo that tells us in this post. 

Last Tuesday, we celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day during the break time. It is a festivity that takes place on 17th March in Ireland to commemorate the death of Saint Patrick, but each year it is celebrated in more cities around the world.

It took place in the “Salon de Actos” which was decorated with shamrocks, balloons and main symbols of the country as the harp, the Celtic cross and the Claddagh, the pot of gold that appears at the end of the rainbow and the Irish flag.
Moreover, the students of 1st and 2nd course of ESO could send drinks and food. Teachers and students could buy drinks as orange juice, kiwi juice, milk and tea which represent the Irish culture and their colours; and food as biscuits with the colours of Irish flag (green, orange and white), green and orange cupcakes, Guinness cake, Sponge with snakes, chocolate coins and bars.
The students collaborated doing a presentation of the story of Saint Patrick’s Day and of a legend called “the farmer and the leprechaun”. They also gave shamrocks as presents to wish good luck, and we have the opportunity of enjoying with the company of an authentic leprechaun.
It was short but complete break time.

American life

Students in 2º ESO D have been reading about American life and they have created these glogs about American meals, American sports and famous American places. Nice work!

Colour Your English

An English free application: "Colour your English". Depeloped by Elisa Bueno Brinkmann and Manuel Merlo Fernández, both are teachers in IES Abdera-ADRA, Almería.

"Colour your English" is aimed at children between twelve and thirteen aged (1st and 2nd ESO level) to learn and improve their english. 

The main character, a twelve years olg boy, named Brian, will guide the students through his life along the multimedia activities and resources. 

There are four different modules: People in my life, Welcom to my school, A house in the country and Let's go places. All of them have seven different sections: Vocabulary, Grammar, Storyline, Culture, Meeting Point, WebQuest, Open Camera.

"Colour your English" wan the INTEF 2n price to Materiales Educativos 2008.

So after this short introduction to this free app, available to work on line as well as to download in your computer, it only rests to go on check it, and enjoy yourself with it!.
